I want TextExpander to expand snippets when I type a specific character (delimiter) after my abbreviation. Which characters are delimiters?
What is a Delimiter? Instead of having a snippet expand immediately after you type the abbreviation, you can set a specific key, or character, to prompt the expansion. This way snippets only expand when you consciously intend them to.
Characters which can act as delimiters are [Space], [Tab], [Return], [Esc] as well as over 30 other characters such as period, comma, slash, backslash, brackets, and tilde.
To select your delimiters:
1. Choose TextExpander > Preferences…
2. Open the Expansion tab.
3. Click Set Delimiters… to see all available delimiters. Drag in the characters you want as delimiters.
What happens to the delimiter after the abbreviation is expanded? You can choose to keep the delimiter character after the snippet, which might make sense when using [Space], or have it disappear in the case of a Comma.
In Preferences > Expansion, the menu "Expand abbreviations:" has two choices for delimiter behavior:
- at delimiter (keep delimiter)
- at delimiter (abandon delimiter)
(To override this setting for a specific snippet, add a "Keep delimiter" specifier ("%+", without the surrounding quotation marks) or an "Abandon delimiter" specifier ("%-") to the very end of your snippet.)
